GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Cherokee County sheriff said he picked up a burglar trying to run away from a Gaffney home by hitchhiking, but two other suspects got away.

Deputies said a Grassy Pond Road homeowner returned home Thursday to find two people loading his televisions and a few guns into an SUV.

The man tried to hold them at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived, but they were able to get away, investigators said. As they fled, deputies said the homeowner fired two shots at them.

Deputies said the homeowner spotted a third man at the front door, but he was able to run through his house, jump out a bedroom window and get away before deputies arrived.

About a mile away from the home, Sheriff Steve Mueller said he was driving by and picked up a hitchhiker who told him he was walking to his girlfriend's home in Gaffney after partying at another nearby home.

Mueller said he drove the man, identified as 20-year-old Samuel Ledford, to the house he claimed to have been at, but the house belonged to the in-laws of a Cherokee County deputy.

Mueller drove Ledford back to the burglary scene where he said Ledford confessed his involvement and offered his apologies to the victims.

Deputies were still looking for the two other burglars who fled the scene in a gold SUV.

Investigators said they are looking into if the trio is connected to several home burglaries in the county and neighboring Cleveland County, NC. Grassy Pond Elementary School was placed on lockdown for a short period of time while deputies searched for Ledford.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
