SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Red Cross hosted its first ever Youth Heroes Breakfast Friday Morning at Savannah State University.

The breakfast was to honor sixth through eighth grade students for their service in communities all across the region.

Members of the Southeast Georgia Chapter of the Red Cross heard the stories of the children and gave them each an award.

Mr. Cliff McCurry was the keynote speaker for the event and shared with the youth as well as the audience about his years of service and thanked the Red Cross for all that it does.

"I think it is wonderful that the Red Cross has chosen to select outstanding youth in the community for their service. I think it starts them on the right path to thinking about how wonderful community service is to others," said McCurry.

The Red Cross honored McCurry with the Lifetime Humanitarian of the Year Award.

"I help the elderly, I help the disabled, I help volunteer at church. Anything that is community based with church or school based-I do those kind of things," said Jamiya Stokes-Brooks, one of the Youth Heroes.

"It felt good because I thought that if I could help out someone then someone would help me. I like that I was recognized for what I do," said Dejiah Golden, another Youth Hero.

Robin Wingate, executive director for the American Red Cross, said she wants to make this an annual event because it encourages the next generation to serve.

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

WTOC's Sonny Dixon hosted the event.
