Bluffton schools plant trees for Arbor Day

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

A grant is making it possible for 16 trees to be planted at seven Bluffton schools.

Waste Management awarded a $5,000 grant to the town of Bluffton. Bluffton Elementary students planted live oaks in front of their school on Friday as part of an Arbor Day celebration.

New trees were planted at these schools:

  • Live oaks - Bluffton Elementary School and H.E. McCracken Middle School
  • Live oaks - Bluffton Elementary Early Childhood Center
  • Red maple - M.C. Riley Elementary School
  • Drake elm - Bluffton High School
  • Leyland cypress - Bluffton Middle School
  • Willow oaks - Pritchardville Elementary School
  • Red cedars - Red Cedar Elementary School

Bluffton has been designated a Tree City by Tree City USA. The designation goes to cities and towns that maintain a tree board, pass a tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrate Arbor Day, according to a news release.
