ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta police believe the driver of a van was the victim of a sneak attack and botched robbery.

They identified the driver as Ronald Clark, 57, of Atlanta.

Around 2:50 p.m. on Friday afternoon, Clark was traveling down Marietta Boulevard in the southbound lanes, near Chattahoochee Avenue, when police believe he was attacked by a man hiding in his backseat.

"If you saw the commotion, you might have thought the person driving this van was disoriented, but in fact he was being the victim of a crime," Atlanta police Sgt. Ricardo Vazquez said. "We are looking for multiple suspects who fled in a black midsize SUV traveling south on Marietta Boulevard."

Witnesses described a horrific scene in the aftermath of the crime.

"When I ran up to the vehicle, blood was everywhere," Danny Hamilton said. "The guy was covered. He was moaning. I tried to make contact with him, he was holding his chest and bleeding very badly. It looked like a hammer had struck his head several times."

Hamilton said a car resembling a Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled up and had possibly four men inside. Clark got out of the car and was motioning to the attacker in the van to get in the car. He said the car had stopped traffic and waited until the attacker jumped in.

"We have been around here 20 years, I have never seen anything like this. Just to see someone pounded with a hammer, I don't know what's going on with America - it is crazy," Hamilton said. "I hope this is not some new thing. I hope it's not some new thing we are going to start seeing, we see carjackings - this is a car robbery."

Atlanta Police Homicide Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area and may have seen something to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477 or investigators at 404-546-4235.
