Donna Crawford still could not believe she and her three children lost their belongings in a fire that destroyed the Overland Street home they'd rented for the past year. It started around 6:30 p.m. Thursday night. The four were taking a nap before Donna cooked supper.
"I woke up to someone banging on my door and telling me to get up because my house was on fire. I opened the bedroom door and the smoke just came toward the kitchen," she said.
She realized the person who woke her was a neighbor she only knows as Pops.
'He said he kicked in the door and came through the fire to get to us," she recalled.
Pops walked by during an interview with the family, but declined commenting on what he did or even giving his name. Donna remains grateful for his efforts and aware she did not lose everything in the fire.
"I've got them (her children) so I didn't lose everything," the mom said.
The Bulloch County Chapter of American Red Cross is assisting the family.
