Rebuilding begins after Port Wentworth hotel fire

Posted: Updated:

Rebuilding began Friday just hours after a three-story hotel caught fire in Port Wentworth.

Investigators still haven't found the cause of the fire but say arson isn't likely.

The flames erupted about 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Country Inn and Suites off Ga. 21 near Interstate 95. It took about half hour for Port Wentworth, Bloomingdale, Pooler and Savannah to put it out. The hotel was about half full when it happened, but injuries were minor. A firefighter had a pulled muscle and a hotel guest was treated on-scene for smoke inhalation.

Friday, the damage took travelers with Country Inn reservations by surprise. Barbara Flynn was looking for a rest, driving from Florida to her home in Massachusetts.

"We came around the corner and we saw all these workers, and I said, ‘What is going on? What is going on with all these trucks? I thought at first they were painting when I saw the ladders. And I said, ‘Oh my goodness. There's been a fire!"

Thursday, the smell of smoke still was strong in water-logged hotel rooms. It's expected to take several weeks for the hotel to re-open.
