Marsh tacky horse race moves to Daufuskie Island

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

The 5th annual marsh tacky horse race will take place at noon Saturday at a new location. It has been moved to Daufuskie Island.

The organizers said this move is all about history. Daufuskie is one of the islands the Spanish left the tackies on when they first sailed to America.

"We call it a homecoming," said Peggie Noon.

The tacky race used to be a part of the Gullah Festival, but this year, Melrose on the Beach Resort on Daufuskie Island decided to sponsor the race.

"We're just so happy that they needed a home this year. We hope they've found a home forever, that every year they come back and race in the beach of Daufuskie."

Organizers say the tackies deserve to be the star of the show and not just a part of an event.

The event is free to the public. Folks interested in going to the horse race will have to pay for transportation to the island. It will cost $45 for a ride. Boats will be leaving from Savannah and Hilton Head Island.
