Bulloch County Sheriff's Office Investigates Homicide

Authorities are looking for clues in the weekend shooting death of a man in Bulloch County. A driver spotted the body on the side of a road near the intersection of I-16 and Highway 119 near the Bryan County line. WTOC talked with the man who found the victim near his home.

Ronald DeLoach stopped because he was angry about trash dumped on his land, and he got much more. The only sound you hear on Bill Futch Road is the roar of traffic on nearby I-16. But DeLoach could hear his heart pounding Saturday morning when he made the grisly discovery less than a mile from his home.

"I hope it don't ever happen again," he told us. "I don't want to see nothing like that around here no more."

Shawn Hardy of Savannah survived four years in state prison but died four days after his parole. Detectives identified at least one gunshot wound to the back of the head. Investigators found no cars in the area, so Hardy didn't come here by himself. The question is, was he killed and brought here or brought here and killed? Either way, by whom?

Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson says they don't get many who-done-its. "When we do have a homicide in Bulloch County, it's usually somebody that knows each other or a family member, unfortunately," he said. "But this is rare for us to have a body found from another county."

While Anderson says they'll examine every possibility, Ronnie DeLoach says from now on he'll mind his own business on the side of the road.

As of this afternoon, the autopsy was still underway, but Sheriff Anderson did confirm two gunshot wounds, one of them to the back of the head.

If anyone has any information about this case, Sheriff Anderson asks they call either the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office at 912.764.8888 or their local authorities.
