What's next for Legends in Savannah?

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Three weeks of golf in the area ended, as usual, with an entertaining Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf and with support from Savannah's newest Champions Tour winners for the event to stay where it has thrived for more than a decade.

"It's great,'' said Jeff Sluman, who teamed with Brad Faxon to win the 2013 Legends title. "We love coming to Savannah, love coming to the restaurants and the golf course has treated me very well over the years. Brad and I look forward to coming back next year.''

Uncertainty with the event's sponsorship could mean the 11th Legends in Savannah was the last here.

Liberty Mutual will soon decide whether to continue the longest-running sponsorship in golf and whether to move the tournament.

But signs on Hutchinson Island last week suggested the first choice, inside and outside the ropes, is to keep the event where it is.

"The players have had nothing but great things to say about the tournament week, said Mark Spadoni, general manager of the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort, the host site for the tournament. "They're hoping to be back here playing next year. We continue to do everything we can to make that a reality. The old saying is you control what you can control and let the other stuff play out.''

And on Sunday, after accepting the Legends trophy, Faxon and Sluman looked ahead to what they hope is a chance to defend their title right where they won it.

"Absolutely,'' said Faxon. "We're the biggest fans of this tournament. I grew up watching it, watching Sam Snead play in it and I said ‘this is a cool thing.' I hope we can play it forever.''
