Powerful storm causes damage in Port Wentworth

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) -

The Shell gas station on Ga. Hwy 21 off of I-95 in Port Wentworth is roped off and closed for business after an afternoon storm damaged the overhang, causing a corner to cave in.

Witnesses say the storm powered through around 3 p.m. Monday. They saw heavy rain and even some hail.

WTOC spoke with employees of area businesses who say people were pulling off the road and seeking cover to avoid the storm. The streets were also beginning to flood, creating dangerous conditions for drivers.

"It was blocked off because the roof was falling over. There were cops. It was roped off. The weather was crazy. The roads were flooded and the cars were sinking in. Other than that, there was a burst along the power line that made a loud shock. My manager heard the shock and the electricity was out," said Heather Sloan, witness.

There is no word yet on when the Shell station will be back open for business. Power was restored in the area around 8 p.m.
