BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

New firefighters are being added to the Bluffton Township Fire District.

The new hires are the district's biggest class at 26 firefighters. It is also the biggest ever in Beaufort County.

Of the 26 new firefighters, 24 of them come from all over the country, and have never been firefighters before. Two of them come from other departments.

"Some will fill vacant positions and the rest will staff two new fire stations. Fire stations located in Colleton River and the Palmetto Bluff community," said Chief Barry Turner.

The two new stations means lower home insurance rates - from a class 10 rating back to a class 3 - for the homes in those areas.

The stations in those two communities will be open 24-7. There will be at least four firefighters on each shift.

The newly hired firefighters are leaving this week for 14 weeks of firefighter training and EMT training.

After the training, all of the 26 firefighters will be on full duty, according to the department. They expect that to happen by the end of the summer.
