Lawmakers urge more federal funds for port project

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Some Georgia politicians are pushing for President Barack Obama to increase his budget for the port expansion project.

U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson and U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston wrote a letter saying they are concerned about the lack of support in the 2014 budget. The budget allocated $1.28 million to the project which expected to cost $652 million.

The senators say the project is near the top of a list of projects Washington is keeping an eye on.

"The cost benefit ratio is high. He has a program called these can't wait - were in the top five of those type projects. The transportation secretary,  the defense secretary, the secretary of the army, they know how important it is for the 3rd Infantry. We believe the case is there for the president to reconsider," Kingston told WTOC.

The Republican politicians say the expansion could create more than 11,500 jobs.
