Vidalia police search for Miami man's killer

Police went house to house on Macon Ave. and a block or so in each direction, asking neighbors for any information about a deadly shooting.

Neighbors near Macon Ave. heard shooting around 11:30 p.m. Monday night and called police. Officers found Deven Jarod Sakers, 28, of Miami, dead at the home.

Sakers body was sent to the GBI crime lab in Savannah for autopsy. Meanwhile, detectives combed through the house and the neighborhood for any information about why Sakers was in Vidalia and how long he had been here and anyone who might have had issues with him.

"We're looking at any possibility, whether they're local or from Florida, and looking for any information. We won't leave any stone unturned," stated Vidalia Police Chief Frank Waits.

Waits assured neighbors that police feel the crime was not random, that the killers knew Sakers.

Neighbors near Macon Ave. did not want to give their names, but said the neighborhood is normally quiet and had not had a homicide in nearly 20 years.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Vidalia Police at 912.537.4123 or toll free through Crime Stoppers at 1.866.439.6313.
