Burglary suspects escape after police chase

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Savannah-Chatham Metro Police stakeout helped to recover two automobiles Wednesday but police are still seeking as many as four men involved in burglaries reported in Chatham and Bryan counties.

Police located a Nissan Altima identified as a vehicle used in the burglaries at an apartment complex on Laroche Ave. Undercover officers in unmarked cars were awaiting the occupants to return to it when a blue Chevrolet Impala drove up with four males inside.

The suspects sped away from the scene in the two cars, prompting one officer to fire his weapon when the Impala drove toward other officers. No one was hit.

With a metro helicopter keeping the Impala in sight, Islands Precinct traffic and crime suppression unit and canine and aviation officers followed the vehicle through east Savannah and the Waters Ave. corridor before it crashed into a curb at Atlantic Blvd. and Seiler Ave. at about 4 p.m.

The occupants of the Impala escaped on foot.

Police located the Altima abandoned on Martha St.

Islands Precinct detectives are continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 912.234.2020 or text CRIMES (274637).
