Family Finance: Is travel insurance worth it?

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Experts say paying extra money for travel insurance when you book a trip could be an extremely smart investment.

When taking a cruise or any other type of vacation, you can get non-reimbursable expenses paid back if you buy travel insurance. Travel insurance is considered a smart purchase that you hope you never need, but a good idea for a risk you're not willing to take.

You can purchase travel insurance to cover everything from a family member's sickness, weather or even an accident or flight delay on the way to your destination.

Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said he urges travelers to strongly consider buying the insurance.

"If you're willing to take the chance that if there's a flight delay, or somebody gets sick and you can't go, you're out the money then you don't need the insurance. Insurance is just paying somebody else to take the risk that you're unwilling to assume."
