Military family displaced by fire

Posted: Updated:
LIBERTY CO., GA (WTOC) -

The home of a Fort Stewart soldier and his family was heavily damaged by a fire Thursday night.

The fire broke out shortly after 7 p.m. on Ga. Hwy 196 in Gum Branch, just west of Hinesville.

Benjamin Offerhall, who is assigned to Fort Stewart, says he was sitting on the couch with his two boys when he noticed the light begin to flicker and then smelled smoke.

He spotted the flames coming form the laundry room, grabbed his boys and went to wake up his wife who was sleeping in the couple's bedroom.

The family and their pets all made it out safely with just the clothes on their back.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
