Officers run to remember fallen state trooper

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

About 300 law enforcement officer from across Georgia and 21 new Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department recruits honored state trooper Ronald O'Neal Thursday. O'Neal was killed in a high-speed pursuit on I-95 in Liberty County back in 1984. Each graduating class chooses a fallen officer to run in memory of.

"This shows the family and the community that we haven't forgotten this officer and hopefully this is the way it is always going to be that no one forgets the blood, sweat and tears that goes into what officers do," said Brian Smith, SCMPD recruit.

The recruits were pinned as Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Officers at a ceremony Thursday afternoon.
