SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

For every Iron Man or Superman that becomes a hit movie, there are just as many comics that teach children to read, spawn creativity and provide hours of joy. In that spirit, nearly 2,000 comic book stores around the world are joining forces for Free Comic Book Day. On May 4, participating stores will be giving away millions of comic books absolutely free of charge to customers of all ages.

The event is a salute to the medium's energy, vitality, and boundless creativity. The celebration also invites new readers to visit their local comic shops to see what comics have to offer. This year's Free Comic Book Day represents a new record with over 1 million more comics than last year and 52 different comic books.

The average comic book will introduce a child to nearly twice as many new words as the average children's book and more than five times as many as the average child-adult conversation, according to a study published in the Journal of Child Language.
