ST. HELENA ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Nearly 20,000 people are expected to gather downtown to see Candice Glover sing Saturday night, but before that she's going to perform at the Penn Center for 200 of her closest friends and family, and the elderly.

According to the director of the Penn Center, it was Glover's idea.

"This was very important to Candice to show her appreciation to her grassroots community," said Walter Mack, director of the Penn Center.

Mack said he was thrilled when he received a call from American Idol executives telling him Glover chose the Penn Center as the venue for a much more intimate concert during the daytime Saturday.

"We're very pleased and honored that Candice has decided to let the center be the first stopping point for her home visit," he said.

Mack said it shows him and the community how much love Glover has for St. Helena Island, and the residents there.

The special concert at the Penn Center is a ticketed event. Glover has chosen the people who will be allowed in.

Mack said those without tickets are welcome to come and watch the concert through the windows. He's happy that he's the director of the center, because he's guaranteed a seat.

"If she sings a song, I can close my eyes and I can hear that strong culture coming from her," said Mack.

The Penn Center is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
