Candice Glover performs free concert in Beaufort

The  song that rocketed Candice Glover to the American Idol top three, Ben E. King's  "I Who Have Nothing," couldn't be further from the truth for a St. Helena woman no one knew just four months ago.

Saturday, a crowd of hundreds was screaming Candice Glover's name.

"I knew people were going to show up," Glover, 23, said in an interview after giving a free concert in downtown Beaufort. "But I didn't know this many people lived in Beaufort. So I was super, super excited, and super surprised."

Governor Nikki Haley was there and declared May 4 Candice Glover day. Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling gave her a key to the city.

Everyone I spoke with said they're certain Glover will be America's next idol.

"It was amazing," Glover said. "All of the different events that I had going on today, I got emotional at each and every one of them. It was overwhelming but I had the best day of my life, the best time ever. And I couldn't ask for anything more."

It was a long day, mobbed by adoring fans, people who remember her when. But Glover took it in stride, already a pro.

"I could fall asleep right here," she said, but had one more round of Idol filming before going home.
