The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a robbery and assault that occurred Friday evening in a St. Helena Island street.

Sheriff's deputies responded just after 6 p.m. Friday to Penn Center on Martin Luther King Jr Drive after receiving several anonymous reports of a possible fight going on.

A 52-year-old man told deputies he had been robbed.

He said was intoxicated and was walking down the road when a vehicle with four black males in it pulled up beside him, according to the BCSO. The men asked him to buy cigarettes for them. When the victim refused, the subjects got out and assaulted the victim, hitting him with sticks until he blacked out, according to the BCSO. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash from the victim, got back into the vehicle and took off.

The victim suffered minor injuries and refused any medical attention. He was unable to provide any description of the suspects. The suspects' getaway vehicle may have been green, red, or gold in color.
