SCMPD: Animal adoptions allowed during quarantine

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said that state veterinarians are permitting animal adoptions from the Animal Control shelter during the 14-day quarantine of the facility.

An outbreak of an upper respiratory illness prompted the quarantine.

The quarantine was implemented Tuesday after an inspection by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which was requested by Animal Control staff. The upper respiratory issues were noticed Tuesday by Animal Control officers in the outside kennels, according to SCMPD.

During the quarantine, the public is not allowed at the Animal Control center. Animals taken in by the shelter is limited during the quarantine.

"If they do have a dog or a cat and they are able to hang on to it at this time, we will be more than happy and willing once the quarantine is lifted. We will have the space and be able to take those animals in. If you can provide that care and hold off for just a little bit, we will do everything we can to accommodate," said Cristina Southerin, SCMPD Animal Control officer.

The public can see adoptable animals online at www.petharbor.com and www.poundpupsinneed.com. Those interested in adopting pets during the quarantine period should call Friends of Animal Control Team Savannah at 912.484.4438 or Pound Pups at 912.401.2991.

Animal Control officers can respond to emergency calls.

The Humane Society for Greater Savannah is stepping up to help Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Animal Control during their quarantine.

While the Animal Control shelter is temporarily closed, the Humane Society is accepting strays as space permits. If you have lost your cat, dog or puppy, please come by our shelter to see if your pet may have been turned in to us. We are open every day between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Anyone looking for a lost pet should check with Animal Control AND the Humane Society, which are both located on Sallie Mood Drive.
