Appeal filed in E-911 upgrade

An appeal has been filed over a $2.35 million no bid contract between Beaufort County and Hargray Communications.

The Island Packet reports that Centurylink is appealing the contract saying it were never told about the county's planned E-911 upgrade. The E-911 service would allow people to get emergency help using text messages, videos and phone calls.

In the deal, Hargray is responsible for building the network and leasing it to the county. The money would come from a state fund of 911 surcharges on phone bills - not directly from taxpayers.
