Lt. Dan Band concert moved to Charleston

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

The Lt. Dan Band concert is usually held at Beaufort's Waterfront Park, but this year it will take place at The Citadel in Charleston.

This is a concert that many folks in Beaufort County look forward to, but they say they understand why the event was moved.

"My wife and I have been involved with it for years. It's a good cause, it's a worthy cause, and I hope the citizens of Charleston support it the same as Beaufort did," said Beaufort County Councilman Brian Flewelling.

The Lt. Dan Band concert is the headline show for the third annual Lt. Dan Week, which raises money for wounded veterans.

Flewelling has been a long time supporter of the cause. In fact, he fought to make sure the organization putting on the concert received the $13,900 from the county.

Flewelling said the show moved to Charleston to accommodate more people. Last year, the concert packed the Waterfront Park and violated fire codes.

When Flewelling found out the show was moved to Charleston, he lobbied to make sure the money was returned.

"It was given specifically for tourism generator, and since we're not going to be getting that tourism, we thought it would be appropriate to get that money back," he said.

Lt. Dan Week organizers have agreed to give back the money.

County leaders say they hope the concert returns to Beaufort in the future.

The county is looking at this as a positive thing. They say the money used to fund the concert can now be used for events like the Gullah Festival and Kids Fest.
