SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 4-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University softball squad split action on Saturday in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional, falling to No. 16 Columbus State, 2-0, but avoiding elimination with a 5-4 nine-inning walkoff win over Wingate at the Armstrong Softball Field.
The Pirates (38-8-1) now advance to Sunday's regional final where Armstrong will have to beat Columbus State twice in order to advance to the Super Regionals.
Game one was decided on one swing of the bat as Columbus State's Morgan Knight launched a two-run home run in the fourth inning that staked the Cougars to a 2-0 advantage.
Mollie Russell (24-8) then gave up just two hits the rest of the way in hurling the complete-game shutout, giving up only four hits and striking out two in the contest for the victory.
