SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A fatal crash in Savannah early Sunday morning leaves two people dead.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded to an accident on Goebel Avenue and Foster Street around 5:30 a.m.

"Officers were patrolling the area when they heard a loud crash and then saw fire," said police spokesmen Julian Miller.

The passenger, Jennifer M. McLaughlin, 30, was partially ejected from the car and officers had to pull her out of the burning vehicle.

The driver of the tan Oldsmobile 88 died in the fiery crash.

McLaughlin was transported to Memorial University Medical Center where she later died.

Officers say the car sped away from a SCMPD officer, who approached it on foot when he saw it parked at the Islands Expressway boat ramp moments earlier.

The car narrowly missed a patrol car on Goebel Avenue and crashed into several trees at Foster Street, bursting into flames.

The Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the crash.
