After fire destroys home, couple marries with nothing but each other

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Almost two months after losing everything in the Carolina Forest Fire, including their wedding rings, one local couple finally tied the knot.

"For better or for worse," are words many couples hear at weddings. Bur, for the Mazzola's, they really take the meaning to heart. Saturday was for the better: celebrating their marriage with friends and family.

But for the worse was having their house and everything inside burn to the ground and discovering their wedding rings were missing from the fire-proof safe. They are putting the past behind them as they focus on their future.

"It's been....a learning experience," explains Nick Mazzola, once a victim of the Carolina Forest fire, he is now celebrating his weekend as the groom.

The bottom he is talking about is the rubble where their Windsor Green home once stood, now completely gone.

"It's been tough. Very, very tough. But we realized we did not lose too much, because we are alive," says Mazzola's bride, Dione.

Not having their rings isn't stopping them from tying the knot. Many strangers reached out to the couple, offering their own rings or financial support.

"We didn't feel comfortable taking that from someone else's family. It was...too personal," explains Mazzola.

During their wedding ceremony, they said a special prayer for all the victims affected by the Carolina Forest fire. While their rings can be replaced, their future together is irreplaceable.

"We've got to stay strong. Be a team. She's got my back, and I've got hers," says Mazzola.

The couple hopes to celebrate their first wedding anniversary back in their Windsor Green home, believing it will be re-built within the next year.
