Jekyll Island asks AG to step in over land issue

Posted: Updated:
JEKYLL ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

A task force appointed to make recommendations about Jekyll Island's future said the coastal state park may have exceeded the legal limit to how much of its land can be developed.

The Jekyll Island Authority has asked Attorney General Sam Olens for a second opinion after the task force concluded officials for decades wrongly counted marsh when calculating the island's total acreage.

A 1971 state law restricts development on Jekyll Island to 35 percent of its land area. By excluding marsh, the task force concluded 38 percent of the island's acreage was developed.
