MOUNT VERNON, GA (WTOC) -

Investigators said Monday the raid on three Montgomery County convenience stores started with complaints from loved ones of frequent customers.

"They told us they had siblings, children, husbands, that were going in these places and gambling away paychecks. They had no money to pay bills. Their children were left with nothing," explained Justin Fountain of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Fountain told WTOC the investigation into illegal gambling began two months ago. Friday evening, deputies joined state revenue agents and others in raiding three stores and arresting the owner of each. The stores included Uvalda Foods, Buzzy's Store on Highway 135, and Rabbit's Truck Stop in Higgston.

Fountain said video gaming machines are legal, but only if stores offer small-value merchandise such as snacks or bottled drinks for prizes. Cash and higher value prizes are prohibited.

Investigator Fountain said the case is ongoing as the sheriff's office and district attorney look for any possible connections between the stores.
