An investigation is underway after authorities say an 80-year-old Harleyville man confined to a wheelchair died several days after he was mauled by a number of dogs.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said Tuesday that Carlton Freeman, of 364 Spring Branch Road, died Monday from dogbite wounds sustained in an attack which happened outside his home on May 8.

According to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Spring Branch Road and Dunnings Road just before 3 p.m. after receiving reports of an animal attack.

They arrived to find Freeman, who was a double-amputee, suffering from wounds that later proved to be fatal.  Freeman told them he was riding his motorized wheelchair on the road when four dogs attacked him.

Neighbors pointed deputies in the direction of the suspected dogs' owner, and investigators interviewed the woman, who lived on Dunnings Road.  Deputies said the woman told them she owns three of the four dogs.  The woman said the dogs she owned comprised of the mother, and two puppies.  She told deputies she didn't know who owned the fourth dog.

The woman told Reporter Harve Jacobs that deputies took all three of her dogs.  Their status, and the status of the fourth dog, is unknown at this point.

According to the report, both puppies and the mother had traces of blood on their fur.  Deputies said they were unable to get the fourth dog to come out of the woods.

The investigation is ongoing.
