JESUP, GA (WTOC) -

Wayne County Sheriff John Carter praised investigators who pursued leads into the night and a new tactical unit that arrested two murder suspects early Thursday morning.

Members of the sheriff's office's Special Emergency Reaction Team surrounded a mobile home off Railroad Street before 5 a.m. Thursday. They entered and found Kenneth Stevens, 28, and his 16 year old girlfriend among the people inside. Sheriff Carter said the team found drugs and a gun with them.

The two are charged with the murder of Eddie Pearson III, 35, of Jesup. Investigators believe Pearson was shot to death in his home hours before his cousin arrived at 8 a.m. to take Pearson to work.

"We found a gun and its the same caliber as the murder weapons," the sheriff disclosed. "We'll have to wait and see if the ballistics tests tell us we have a match."

Carter said investigators followed leads Wednesday afternoon and into Thursday morning, including a vehicle spotted near Pearson's home. The sheriff said investigators tracked that vehicle back to Stevens and the teen at the mobile home where they'd subleased a bedroom just a few days before.

Carter said the SERT had been formed months ago and undergone tactical training for situations such as this.

Stevens is charged with murder. He and the teen are charged with armed robbery and felony murder. Both remain in the Wayne County jail pending a bond hearing.
