SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah joined cities across the United States Friday morning to celebrate National Bike to Work Day.

Citizens participated in a group commute from Habersham Village Shopping Center to Johnson Square, where bicycle commuters enjoyed free coffee and healthy snacks, as well as some exciting announcements.

The group commute left from Habersham Village at 7:30 a.m. and ended up in Johnson Square for refreshment and the news conference around 8:15 a.m.

"Since 2000, bicycle commuting has increased 47 percent in the U.S. and more than 400 percent in some communities," said John Bennett in a news release, executive director of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign. "There is growing interest in bicycle commuting here in Savannah and we invite experienced and new commuters to join us on May 17."
