SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

It has been almost a year since Isle of Hope firefighter Wesley Franklin was gunned down during a robbery at Deb's Pub and Grub in Sandfly.

The gunman, Brandon Mackey, 26, was arrested Thursday night in Watauga, Texas and has been charged with murder, armed robbery, forgery and theft.

The 21-year-old firefighter's family and friends thought they were close to this point several times before. They would hear that there was a break in the case but would later be disappointed. So when they got the call Thursday night, Franklin's parents could not allow themselves to get too excited. But once the news was confirmed, there was no holding back their joy and relief.

"This is just beautiful. My baby is smiling down on us from heaven and is here. I am very thankful and I have got an angel sitting on my shoulder," said Delane Resse-High, Wesley Franklin's mother. "I feel a huge relief and everything else. It is going to be hard for me to probably see him, but he is in handcuffs."

"You don't know how you are going to react -- nervous, scared, happy -- it is a lot of emotions going through at one time. On top of that, you try to remain calm. It was worth it because we are happy and it is a good day," said Jimmy Franklin, Wesley Franklin's Father.

Word of the arrest comes 39 days shy of one year since Franklin was shot and killed, which was 24 days before what would have been his 22nd birthday.

Friends and family already have plans in place to commemorate both of those dates, they will just observe them now with a little more peace of mind.
