BROOKLET, GA (WTOC) -

Gary Dorsey and his family went through the ashes of their home Monday to salvage what could be saved. Lightning struck the home Sunday afternoon and gutted nearly everything behind the brick facade.

Despite the loss, the family expressed their thanks to the fire departments that responded to the call.

"We're grateful to the Bulloch County fire department and others, Leefield ( Fire Department) was here. There were four or five (departments) and they did everything they could do," explained Gary Dorsey Jr, who lives just a few miles from his parents.

Bulloch County volunteers with the American Red Cross also responded to assist the families and give aid to fire units.

The Dorseys told fire crews they heard a loud boom and went outside to find smoke coming from the top of the house. Witnesses said the house was gutted within a few minutes of the lightning strike.
