No charges filed in double-amputee's mauling death

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Authorities say no charges will be filed in the death of a double-amputee from Harleyville who was fatally mauled two weeks ago.

According to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, investigators have determined the four dogs that mauled 80-year-old Carlton Freeman along Spring Branch Road on May 8 were feral dogs.

Three of the dogs were originally believed to be cared for by a neighbor, but that has since changed.

The sheriff’s office also said Freeman and his family expressed their wishes that no charges be filed in the case.

Freeman died last week in the hospital after the attack.  He told investigators he was riding his motorized wheelchair near the corner of Dunnings Road when he was attacked around 3 p.m.

The sheriff's office did not comment on plans for the dogs involved in the attack.
