Program Brings College Classes to TV

Would you like to take college courses, but have a hard time getting to campus? A partnership among the Technical College of the Low Country, the City of Hardeeville, and South Carolina ETV might help. Now, instead of going to class, the classroom will come to living rooms across Hardeeville, Bluffton and Okatie through Hardeeville's new government access television station.

Register at the Technical College of the Low Country. You can reach them at 843.525.8211.

"We knew that some of our students or potential students can't come to one of our campuses, whether it's the Varneville site or the Bluffton High School site or here at the Beaufort campus, and we also knew because of transportation or times some people can't take courses," said AnnMarie Adams with the Technical College of the Low Country.

But that's now changed. A number of courses taught on TCL's campuses, from accounting to business and marketing, will now air on cable simultaneously so students can tune in and learn from home.

"Most of the instructors have taught this way for quite a while, so they're familiar with the needs of a student not physically in the classroom," said Adams. "They recognize they may have to repeat information, have a telephone or fax line for questions."

Beside offering classes, the channel also offers different programming from the South Carolina ETV programs to local sporting events and council meetings.

"Our whole purpose of being here is to benefit Hardeeville," said the city's Nicole Pisciottano. "It's something the city has wanted to do to get more people involved."

To get credit for the courses, you do have to register at the Technical College of the Low Country. You can reach them at 843.525.8211.
