Two women who run a daycare in Port Wentworth were arrested after a child was found walking down the street.

Port Wentworth police responded on Tuesday to a report of a young children walking in the street. A woman who found the child told police she saw the child walking down the middle of the street soaking wet.

Officers searched the neighborhood looking for the parents. They found that the child had been missing from a daycare center being run out of a home. The daycare operators didn't know where the girl was or that she had been missing, according to police.

Police contacted the all the parents who had children at the daycare, told them about the incident, and had them come pick up their children.

"This incident could have had a much more tragic outcome, about 100 feet from the daycare is a large pond. We are glad that the child made it through the ordeal unharmed" said Port Wentworth Department of Public Safety Director Matthew Libby in a statement.

The two women running the daycare Shauna Rice and Edma Herrington were taken into custody and charged with cruelty to children, reckless conduct and contributing to the depravation of a minor.

Rice and Herrington were booked into the Chatham County Detention Center and released on $5,000 bond.
