Residents on Savannah's east side are facing growing pains as they await the completion of the Home Depot shopping center. The old Kmart on Victory Drive near Skidaway is gone, and it looks like Home Depot is on schedule. But the plans are causing problems for those who use the old Kmart plaza as a traffic short cut. The parking lot is now blocked off by a fence.
Georgia Rep. Mickey Stephens (R-Dist. 161) says the road block may pale in comparison to traffic congestion when Home Depot finally opens. "Traffic off the parkway has always been bad, but it will be a larger problem with Home Depot," he said. "And I think it will need some attention from the city or the DOT."
Stephens expects the City of Savannah to address traffic concerns, possibly adding a new turning lane off of the Truman Parkway.
The Home Depot is expected to open in the spring, with construction beginning this fall.
