Port Wentworth Police get public safety grant

Posted: Updated:

The Port Wentworth Police Department has been awarded a public safety partnership grant totaling $15,000 from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety in Atlanta.

The incentive grant, which will last through September, is designed for smaller law enforcement agencies that have partnered with GOHS and excelled in participating in highway safety initiatives as well as making their communities safe during the previous year.

The criteria used to determine the agencies awarded the grant were reporting enforcement data to GOHS, participation in meetings of the local traffic enforcement network, hosting network meetings and submitting applications to GOHS' annual law enforcement awards program, Governor's Challenge.

"This grant will enable the Port Wentworth Police Department to continue operating the Southeastern Traffic Enforcement Network which provides equipment and manpower to police departments throughout southeast Georgia for traffic safety initiatives. The grant will also help to provide equipment to the Port Wentworth Police Department's traffic enforcement unit" said Captain Lee Sherrod, Commander of Police Services for the Port Wentworth Department of Public Safety.

$7,500 will be used to provide incentive items for departments participating in the Southeastern Traffic Enforcement Network. $7,500 will be used for equipment for the Port Wentworth Police Department's traffic enforcement unit.

The goal of the grant is to reward agencies for their proactive approach to traffic safety and to provide them with the necessary tools to effectively continue their efforts.
