Daycare shut down after 2 year old wanders away

State regulators shut down a home daycare in Port Wentworth Thursday, two days after a toddler wandered away.

She was gone for more than an hour, but when police knocked on the door, they say daycare workers didn't even know the 2-year-old girl was gone.

Shauna Rice, owner of Animated Kids Daycare and daycare worker Edma Herrington were charged with cruelty to children, reckless conduct and contributing to the depravation of a minor.

The commissioner in charge of that regulatory agency – Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning – called the situation appalling, saying that Rice's response, "appeared to be one of, ‘What's the big deal?'"

"The message that I would send is, the safety of children that are entrusted to a caretaker such as a daycare provider or a  family daycare home is a sacred trust that a parent has to give to them so that they can work."

Cagle recommends doing a through interview with a daycare before sending your children there, asking for safety plans such as what they'll do if a child wanders away or how they'd handle an intruder in a daycare. Pay attention to how workers interact with children. Then drop by the daycare unannounced, to make sure workers are interacting with children the same way they did when they expected a visitor.
