SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Deepening the Port of Savannah will be just as important to Georgia's growth as was the expansion of Atlanta's international airport.

That was the message Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed brought when he spoke at the Savannah Economic Development Authority's annual luncheon Thursday.

"I think the opportunity that we have, that we all have," Reed said in an interview," and not just in terms of the city of Savannah, but as a state, to have another great dynamic economic contributor, on the order of Hartsfield Jackson, really is the deepening of the port of Savannah."

Reed told a packed house he's seen substantial progress with the project since becoming involved three years ago – and that President Barack Obama brought up the importance of the harbor deepening when he visited Atlanta last weekend.
