Teenager on skateboard airlifted after being hit by truck near high school

A teenage boy had to be airlifted to a Charlotte-area hospital after he was struck by a truck near his high school on Friday morning.

WBTV has learned that 16-year-old Mason Stewart is a 10th grade student at Hough High School in Cornelius.

Witnesses say he was struck by the side view mirror of the passing truck around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Robert Walker Drive and Davidson Concord Road. That isn't far from Hough High.

Emergency crews say Stewart had to be airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center-Main, in Charlotte, with critical injuries.

Police say the teen was attempting to cross the road to get to school when he was hit by the oncoming pick-up truck.

A trauma surgeon, who lives near the area, rushed out to help Stewart until medics arrived.

WBTV's Astrid Martinez was able to speak to the driver of the pick up truck involved in the accident. He says he drives through this street five days a week to get to work .

"I mean he's only 16," he told WBTV. "I hope he's ok."

The man says he doesn't think the teen saw him coming, saying Stewart seemed to just appear on his skateboard. He attempted to swerve to the left to miss the teen, but says Stewart never seemed to notice the truck.

The driver became emotional during the interview and says he is distraught over the accident.
