Veterans hang flags in Beaufort National Cemetery

Posted: Updated:

Volunteers gathered Friday to put up an avenue of flags at the Beaufort National Cemetery.

The Disabled Veterans of Beaufort and the Kiwanis Club put the flags up Friday morning. They do this every year on the Friday before Memorial Day to honor the men and women who gave their lives to defend the country.

The flags are the same ones that laid across the caskets of some of the fallen heroes who are buried at the cemetery.

"It's a celebration," said Lt. Col. Terry Stone, retired Marine. "These men and women gave the sacrifice when they were called on by their country to do it. They didn't run or avoid it. They stood up and they did it whether they believed in it or not."

A group of Lady's Island Middle School students were also there to help put flags on every one of the graves.
