Dogs, owners jump at contest in Statesboro

Dog owners from near and far converged on Anderson's General Store in Statesboro to give their pets a "jump" on the Dock Dogs competition.

Each pair lined up atop a 40 foot dock. The dogs took a running start and launched themselves over a 40 foot long pool. A camera helps measure each jump down to the inches.

Dozens of dogs took their jumps Friday while more will compete over the weekend. The Dock Dogs series includes qualifying events like this, as well as regional, national and world championships.

"You compete to earn an invitation to those events and eventually the world's [championship]," explained Dock Dogs' Chad Kane.

The opportunity brought out local owners like Beth Clifton and her dog, Toby.

"We do this at home so when we found out Dock Dogs was coming to town, we figured we'd give it a try," she said.

The competition continues Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Anderson's at the corner of Northside Drive and Beasley Road.
