SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An accused killer has returned to Savannah to stand trial.

Brandon Mackey, who police say gunned down 21-year-old firefighter Wesley Franklin at a Sandfly bar nearly a year ago, arrived at the Chatham County Jail on Saturday, the last leg of his extradition from Texas.

WTOC was there as Mackey, 26, arrived at the jail and spoke exclusively Deborah Pembroke -- who owns Deb's Pub and Grub, the bar where Franklin's life was taken in an attempted robbery. It was the first time Pembroke discussed the incident publicly.

Pembroke built a fence behind the bar. Intended to keep customers safe, it became a memorial to Franklin and grew into a monument for all victims of violent crimes in Savannah.

"That started when it got posted on Facebook, and other relatives of victims of crimes wanted to put their family members on the fence," she said. "I just posted and said they were more than welcome to put their families on the fence."

Pembroke said she's glad video cameras she installed just before the June robbery and shooting helped bring an arrest in the case.

When asked why she'd declined interview requests until now, Pembroke choked up, saying her bar's patrons and staff are tight-knit and the pub is a gathering place for the Sandfly community.

"It was very sad... emotional... very hard for me," she said.
