Glennville military cemetery hosts Memorial Day program

Posted: Updated:

More than 450 veterans and 100 veterans' spouses are laid to rest at the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Glennville. Many gathered on Memorial Day to remember those killed in combat as well as the families they left behind.

Cemetery director Ernie Cowart urged the audience to remember those loved ones as they struggled, perhaps the rest of their lives, to deal with life without their service member.

The keynote speaker was Lt. Col. Lee Overby, commander of 1-76th Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Stewart.

"If we can put an impression in young minds about what veterans do and what they mean to this country, it will stay with them the rest of their lives," Cowart said afterward.

He noted the cemetery is still less than ten years old, so it does not house any of the veterans killed during World War II, Korea, or Vietnam. However, they have laid to rest some service members killed in the current War on Terror.

The ceremony also remembered five Georgians killed in combat in the last twelve months.
