Swimmer goes missing at Wimbee Creek

A tragic end to the Memorial Day weekend for one man from the Lowcountry. According to authorities, he dissappeared, Monday afternoon, while swimming in Wimbee Creek in Seabrok.

According to the man's cousin the family calls him Bubba. The cousin said Bubba and another cousin were at the creek swimming when something happened to Bubba.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and the Coast Gaurd were all called out to the creek to help with the search.

According to DNR, wittnesses say Bubba was last seen floating down the creek, face up. By the time DNR arrived on scene, there was no sign of Bubba.

DNR said the Wimbee Creek is safe, and they don't normally have incidents like that happened there. They believe the strong current was a factor in Monday's incident.

"Any time your swimming in [body of water], it doesn't matter what body of water it is, there are factors that could combine to an incident happening," said Sgt. Michael Paul Thomas, DNR. "We had a full moon a couple days ago, which made the current strong."

The search for Bubba will continue Tuesday morning. Authorties are now calling it a search and recovery.
