GUYTON, GA (WTOC) -

The entirety of Effingham County -- including police, firefighters and sheriff's deputies, all responded to a blaze at the Smoke House BBQ restaurant in Guyton.

The restaurant was closed when the fire began late Tuesday night. It started in a building to the rear of the restaurant but no word yet on what sparked it.

It took all of the county's firefighters two hours to put the fire out. Georgia Highway 17 was shut down and stayed that way into the early morning. The road is back open.

The damage to the landmark barbecue joint, located at 208 Central Blvd., comes as a disappointment to many, including the sheriff.

"Just about everybody in the county on the north end knows about the Smoke House. It's got real good food and a lot of folks eat there" said Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie.

We are told there is lots of water damage inside, however, it is not a total loss, and the Smoke House BBQ will be able to re-open.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
