JASPER CO., SC (WTOC) -

Police have arrested a school official in Jasper County. Samuel Gregory, who was once chairman of the Jasper County Commission, is accused of assaulting a student.

The arrest warrant says Gregory grabbed a juvenile at Hardeeville Middle School, became aggressive, and wrestled with the student in the hallway. When the student wouldn't listen, Gregory punched the student in the stomach as another teacher held the student, trying to restrain him. Some of the incident was caught on video.

Gregory has been charged with assault and battery. He has worked with the school district for 20 years. He has been placed on administrative leave with pay as the investigation continues.

The district released the following statement on Wednesday night:

After learning of the allegations, the District placed Mr. Gregory on paid administrative leave and is in the process of conducting a thorough investigation.  We are working to conclude the investigation as expeditiously as possible.  In light of the confidentiality rights of employees, the District is not at liberty to offer further comment on this matter at this time.
