The images of tornado victims in Oklahoma brought back memories to Reba Van Meter. She thought about the people in Mississippi she met through 2005 and 2006 who felt the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Members of her family and her staff at Job Training Unlimited made a total of eleven relief missions to D'Iberville Mississippi to carry supplies donated from Evans County people.

"I thought one trip would do it and we'd be done," she confided. "But when people started thanking us for those supplies. You just want to do everything you can. When you see a grown man cry for the gift of a bottle of water, it moves you."

She's teamed with Claxton Fire and it's auxiliary again to collect supplies with plans to make the journey to Moore, Oklahoma.

"We also want to challenge other fire departments to collect supplies," said Claxton chief Harold Rogers. "And if they don't have a way to get it out there or get it here, call us and we'll come get it and take it."

They will take collections at Job Training Unlimited on U.S. Highway 301, south of Highway 280, at Claxton City Hall and the Food Fresh supermarket on U.S. Highway 301 North.

The supply list includes:

  • Bottled Water
  • Non-Perishable Snacks/Foods
  • Canned goods (that do not require can openers)
  • Diaper/Wipes
  • Hand Sanitizer or Hand Sanitizer Wipes
  • Bagged Pet Food
